NCCD is highly regarded for its pioneering work in research, advocacy, and program development aimed at improving outcomes for girls and women. NCCD has actively assisted over 40 state agencies and 200 county agencies across the country. Additionally, NCCD has a long history of developing effective tools for use by administrators and direct service workers and then implementing and sustaining their use in multiple jurisdictions. Projects range from the evaluation of girls’ detention and probation program in California to the development of a gender-specific risk assessment tool for Cook County, Illinois. The major research projects on girls in California (No Place to Hide, 1998) and in Florida (Educate or Incarcerate, 2000 and Rallying Cry for Change, 2006) spearheaded systemic change in both states—a model for the nation. In addition, NCCD worked with the state of Delaware to develop a blueprint for girls’ services there titled, Delaware Girls Initiative: Growing Great Girls (2006). Currently, NCCD is assisting in the development of model aftercare program for girls in California.  In each of these efforts, NCCD has collaborated with agency staff to conduct research and implement programs and systems that maximize the impact of innovative programs, enhance the abilities of agency staff, and enable corrections managers to deploy resources more effectively.
