A Call for Gender Equity for Girls in the Juvenile Justice System

NCCD has engaged in an extensive needs assessment. The assessment included research, meetings, focus groups, summits, teleconferencing, and pilot projects—all of which point to an overwhelming need for a Center that can provide resources and training to improve the lives of girls involved in the juvenile justice systems around the country. Our research and experience has shown us that many private agencies and local and state jurisdictions struggle with the same issues:

  1. The need for a gender-responsive, culturally competent assessment tool aligned with training that will build the skill sets of staff to effectively intervene with girls in both residential and nonresidential settings.
  2. A process for assessing girls and developing a continuum of services best suited to meet their needs.
  3. An evaluation of what works and what does not work.
  4. Access to cutting edge and up-to-date resources.
