Addressing the Need

NCCD has engaged in an extensive needs assessment. The assessment included research, meetings, focus groups, summits, teleconferencing, and pilot projects—all of which point to an overwhelming need for a Center that can provide resources and training to improve the lives of girls involved in the juvenile justice systems around the country. Our research and experience has shown us that many private agencies and local and state jurisdictions struggle with the same issues:

Dealing with high-risk behaviors including self-mutilation or other self injurious behaviors.
Strategies for creating a gender-responsive culture and environment.
Appropriately addressing and redirecting sexual relationships that develop when girls are in III placements.
De-escalating behaviors.
Trauma and victimization.
Effective intervention and treatment strategies.
Specialized training for direct care staff.
Substance abuse.
Mental health.
Effective communication.
Effectively working with families.
Same sex relationships.
